As most of you have already heard, Dr. George Tiller, abortion provider in Wichita, Kansas, was assassinated on Sunday morning while attending church.

Dr. Tiller was a hero, a man who had deep compassion for his work and his patients. PPNYC had referred patients to his practice over the years and was always gratified by his care and compassion. A couple years ago, Dr. Tiller came to speak at PPNYC and shared his experiences and passion for his work with our clinical staff. He was a true inspiration to us all.

Tonight , Monday June 1st at 6pm, we will gather in Union Square with our friends, colleagues and supporters to honor the life of this courageous man who dedicated his life to serving women when they were in need.

Please join us to remember Dr. Tiller and to stand in solidarity with those who work every day to ensure that women and their families have access to the care they need even in the face of violence and intimidation.

A friend of mine created an iPhone application of the Leaping Bunny Compassionate Shopping Guide. I know most of you don't have iPhones or iPod touches, but please pass this link on to anyone you know who does. It's a free application, and with it, you can search over 250 cosmetic, personal care, and household product companies that do not test on animals.

If you're familiar with our print or online Shopping Guide (www.leapingbunny.org/shopping.php), feel free to write a review anyway. The more positive reviews the better! :)

WATER Internships Summer 2009

Become a part of an inspiring community of feminists in religion. Become a WATER intern!

WATER welcomes students from seminaries, universities, and colleges both national and international to participate in the internship program.

Interns engage in the full range of activities at WATER, from office work to program planning. They learn how a small non-profit is run and what it takes to nurture such an Alliance. Interns wishing to do their own research will have a chance to utilize WATER's constantly growing library as well as consult with our experienced staff through periodic in-house seminars.

Interns must commit to a minimum of six weeks and can stay for a year or more. Internships are unpaid. Some interns are placed through established programs of their universities or religious organizations, such as Mennonite Voluntary Service. All participants are encouraged to apply for academic credit from their home institutions for their work at WATER.

Check out the attached Internship Application for more details. Give us a call if you have any questions about the program, 301.589.2509.

Summer 2009 Internships will run during the period between May 19 and July 31. Applications are due by 8 May 2009.

First, tomorrow evening (Thursday) at 7pm in the Bade Museum, Starhawk will be giving a talk and then leading a small ritual dance on the quad. Starhawk is a world-famous author from the Reclaiming tradition of witchcraft and a central figure in how issues of activism, particularly feminism and ecological concerns, have been made a core of the modern pagan movement. The talk is titled 'Earth Spirit, Earth Action' and it will be awesome. Come if you can, and let everyone know! Having her on our hill is a major event!

I have not posted the entire time I have worked at Omega Institute. I have been busy. I switched from part-time to full-time after three weeks of work. My manager also asked me to stay a month longer. So, yes, the job has been a good fit. Many of my friends from seminary were disappointed for me that I did not find a job in ministry or religious studies...exactly.

I am not. Days pass during which I thoroughly enjoy shaping vegetables with my bare hands, unless they are to be served raw, for which I wear latex gloves. The atmosphere of Omega Institute is for sure spiritual, so geez I think this is a great job for this time just after seminary!

Yesterday my bicycle broke...while I was riding it. I'm fine. The handlebars came off! I did not hit the ground...not sure how. I had nothing to hold on to to stop myself. I kept my balance while moving forward and touched the ground with my feet enough to slow to a stop. I was wearing a helmet.

I never worked for WOC. It is a Catholic organization with the ordination of women its goal. Since I am no Catholic, I never joined WOC. I am a friend of WOC and worked for WATER, the nonprofit that welcomed WOC staff the day after the fire. I know Aisha, the author of this editorial. Please donate to WOC.

Women's Ordination Conference NEWS

Last Friday, a three-alarm fire broke out in our office building, and over 20 suites were affected. Ours was one of five that were completely destroyed in the flames. Thankfully, no one was hurt.

I have been inside the office building, and it was nearly unrecognizable. The stench of stale smoke hovered in the air, and everything was covered with black or gray soot. In the place where the WOC office had been for nearly 20 years, thick wires hung from the ceiling, charred walls bent into the hallway, and a generator-powered lamp was the only source of light.

Not a thing was left untouched by the fire. Our computers melted; our books burned -- the library of over 700 books is gone. We are insured, but it will be 4-6 weeks (if not longer) before the claim is settled.

As we have done before in so many other ways, we will -- like the phoenix -- rise from the ashes! We have found options for new office locations, but the cost will be significantly more expensive than our former office.

Please donate!

Executive Director
